How to change a reservation of a hotel in Italy?

We made a hotel reservation at booking.com, for a hotel in Rome, unfortunately the date was wrong, and we want to change it now. We booked the hotel from the 7th to the 14th of March, but we are planning to stay only from the 9th till the 13th. We already contacted the website, but they are not competent in this case, as it was an early booking, and non-refundable, they suggested us to contact the hotel. The money was already withdrawn from our account. How should I go on? Should I call them or send a mail? And what should I give as a reason for changing our reservation? Do you have any tips for this situation?

Hotel reservation confirmation letter for Schengen Visa?

I wish to apply for Schengen Visa on mid of June along with my wife. When we made the hotel reservation they have included only the name of my wife who did the reservation through the hotel web site. (The Web site doesn’t have the option to enter the second person’s name). But the letter mentions that the hotel has been reserved for two adults and the check-in-date and check-ot-date etc. Could you please let me know whether the reservation letter should contain both of us names or just one name is fine. I heard The french embassy is very strict about this matter…..
