Can a hotel charge my cc even if I didn’t stay there?

OK, so my fiance made this reservation online a couple of days ago for a weekend stay. Our plans suddenly had to change so I called customer service to cancel the reservation. Customer service told me that this reservation had a ‘NO Cancel Policy’ and that we would get charged anyway. I even spoke to a manager to cancel and explained our situation and he said no. Can the hotel really charge us for services we haven’t even used? Is there anyway around this?
